We are lucky to be able to read his writings which are both timeless and practical. Indeed, Seneca used a search for wisdom to navigate through life’s ups and downs. His ideas and teachings inspired multiple historical figures such as Francis Bacon, Pascal and Montaigne.

However, there are inconsistencies between his life and his principles. For one thing, he was closely associated with Nero. Seneca was exiled by the emperor Claudius to the island of Corsica where he remained for eight years, until Aggripina, the mother of the future emperor Nero, secured his release to allow him to be the tutor of Nero.

Unfortunately, Nero would become one of the most tyrannical emperors of the Roman Empire which led many people to accuse Seneca of hypocrisy.

In the end, Seneca ended up a victim of his dedication to a tyrant. Nero thought that Seneca was planning a coup and ordered to have him killed.

Seneca and most other stoic philosophers used this philosophy to live. They learned to use wisdom to navigate the unexpected pitfalls of life. If you read his work today, you can still draw lessons that you can apply to your lives as well.
